About Sheffield Live

Sheffield Live! exists to give members of the community the chance to be involved in radio. Through Sheffield Live! you will hear many different voices, accents, stories, music and languages. We give air space to local musicians, bands, DJs, composers and writers. Sheffield Live! brings you the sounds of a lively and diverse City and fights to break down the barriers of stereotype. Listen to us on 93.2fm and you will hear a City that reflects the voices, sound and music of the world.

Sheffield Live! 93.2FM provides an eclectic mix of original programming produced and presented by local people. The schedule features talk shows, magazine programmes, groundbreaking comedy, local musicians and artists and a wide variety of cutting edge music produced by leading local DJs. Whilst the station's primary language is English, there are also community programmes in Arabic, Cantonese, French, Mandarin, Pashto, Punjabi, Spanish, Tigrinya and Urdu.

Sheffield Live! 93.2 FM has a measured transmission coverage of 359,000 people or 295,000 adults located in urban Sheffield and Rotherham . Since our launch in October 2007 we have built a loyal and diverse local audience.

Get Involved

Geting involved at Sheffield Live! is vocational - you learn through doing, so what you put in you get out. It's a place where you can represent what's best about you and where the people are friendly and the atmosphere always exciting.

At Sheffield Live! you can learn how to DJ, present radio programmes, create your own website or learn to write a play. You can represent what's best about you and where you live. And you will be using industry standard equipment in one of 3 studios.

Sheffield Live! has friendly and experienced trainers and mentors. Our training courses cover media and communication skills, community reporting, programme production and presentation.

We currently offer free training courses for young people aged 16-18 who are not in education, employment or training. This is supported Sheffield City Council, European Social Fund and Learning and Skills Council and beneficiaries may qualify for Educational Maintenance Allowance . We also offer customised training courses for groups and organisations including in how to use the media. Contact us to find out more.

There are also currently three main areas in which you can get involved with the work we do here at Sheffield Live! No previous experience is necessary, though volunteers must be reliable and willing to make a regular commitment.

Production

Sheffield Live! is a public access community broadcaster. All our programmes are made by volunteer producers, presenters and reporters. Do you want to get involved in programme making? We update our programme schedule on a seasonal basis but we are always open to receive new programme proposals and ideas.

We also have opportunities to get involved in our core programme strands – the “Sheffield Uprising” breakfast show and the lunchtime “Communities Live!” slot. Get in touch with details of your interests and your previous experience, if any, in media production or, if you have a new programme idea, contact us and ask for a programme proposal form.

Studio/Duty Managing

Sheffield Live! currently broadcasts 7 days a week for 19 hours a day, both via the Internet and 93.2fm.

Duty managing involves listening to the broadcast and monitoring the content and sound quality; assisting presenters and guests in the studio; sorting out any technical/sound problems that may arise. Duty managers must be over 18, willing to work unsociable hours and have the initiative to work on their own.

In order that we can continue broadcasting, volunteer duty managers are vital to Sheffield Live! Volunteering gives you the chance to be part of the Sheffield Live! team, assisting presenters and guests and learning and putting to use technical skills.

Reception

This involves working on the front-of-house reception desk. You will be the first point of contact for both personal visits and telephone callers.

The main duties include taking messages for members of staff, providing information to the public, logging service users onto the station's computer network and assisting them with computer help where necessary.

Reception work is available in either 2 or 4 hour slots. Receptionists must be aged 16 or over, and ready to welcome a diverse group of people. Volunteering gives you the chance to be part of the team and learn useful office and reception skills. .

Open Call For Programme Proposals

(28th August 2009)

Have you got an idea that you would like to turn into a radio programme for broadcast on community radio? Is there something you would like to hear on the Sheffield airwaves? This could be your chance to make it happen! Sheffield Live! has launched its latest open call for programme proposals.

Sheffield Live! provides public access to production and broadcast facilities supported by experienced media trainers, mentors and producers. We are particularly interested in new ideas for speech based programmes including current affairs, specialist themes like environment and health, new writing, arts and culture. We welcome proposals to serve particular communities of interest in our coverage area, including programmes in community languages. We encourage innovative ideas including experimental uses of sound and radio.

Sheffield Live! prides itself on being first for Sheffield music with programmes by some of Sheffield's leading local DJs and a high profile for local music and musicians. If you have an idea for a specialist music programme, let us know. We will be reviewing and renewing our music mix and there will be opportunities across the schedule for new talent to join our music programming roster.

There are many others ways you can get involved, for example by joining our morning or midday production teams as a researcher, reporter, presenter, producer or technical operator. Training will be provided for all new programme volunteers with an opportunity to learn media production skills and gain practical experience in a working broadcast environment. Contact Sheffield Live! at info@sheffieldlive.org or come to one of our open meetings if you want to find out more. Open meetings will be held on 9 and 14 September at Sheffield Live! city centre premises, from 6.30pm at 15 Paternoster Row, Sheffield S1 2BX and include a studio tour and opportunity to meet some of our current presenters.
